How to Register an American Bulldog Litter with ABRA
What you need, what it costs, how long it takes, and what happens after.
The American Bulldog Registry and Archives (ABRA) has been the breed-specific registry for American Bulldogs since 1998. Registering your litter with ABRA puts every puppy on the permanent breed record, gives buyers a recognized pedigree they can verify, and feeds the public archive at pedigreedatabase.ca that breeders, judges, and researchers actually use.
The whole process takes about fifteen minutes once you have your sire, dam, and puppy details ready. Registration is \$20 per puppy. There is no separate litter fee. Here is exactly how it works.
What documents do I need to register an American Bulldog litter?
To register an American Bulldog litter with ABRA you need five things: an ABRA account with your kennel prefix on file, the sire on record, the dam on record with you as the registered owner, the whelp date, and the count and sex of every puppy. If you did not own the stud, you also need a breeding authorization code from the stud owner. There is nothing to scan, notarise, or mail. The whole submission happens inside your ABRA account.
- An ABRA account (free) with your kennel name and prefix on file.
- The sire on your ABRA record. If you do not own the stud, you need a breeding authorization code from the stud owner.
- The dam on your ABRA record. You must be the registered owner.
- The whelp date.
- The puppy count and the sex of each puppy.
If any of those pieces are missing, fix them first. Trying to register a litter against a parent that is not on file will not work. ABRA's Blue Ribbon program is also worth knowing about before you breed because litters from two Blue Ribbon Brood Stock parents qualify for Blue Ribbon designation in the archive at no extra cost.
What paperwork do you need to register a litter of puppies?
Every registry asks for the same four things: proof both parents are registered with that same registry, proof the breeding was authorized, the whelp date, and the number and sex of the puppies. What changes between registries is which one of them will accept your breed at all. That last point is where American Bulldog breeders most often lose time, so check it before you gather anything.
The American Bulldog cannot be litter-registered with the American Kennel Club. The breed was added to the AKC Foundation Stock Service in November 2019, and the AKC states plainly that "FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration." FSS records lineage and opens some companion events. It does not issue registration papers for a litter. Generic litter-registration checklists written around the AKC therefore do not apply to this breed, however closely they seem to match the question.
For an American Bulldog litter the registries that will actually register it are ABRA, UKC, ABA, and NKC. With ABRA the paperwork is the five items listed above, all held inside your ABRA account, with nothing to scan, notarise, or mail. See ABRA vs Other Registries for what each one is built to do.
Step 1: Create a Free ABRA Account
A free ABRA account is all you need to register a litter. You do not need a registered kennel, and you do not need Breeder Pro membership. Create your free account here.
Then register both parents with ABRA. Dog registration is \$20 each. Only ABRA-registered dogs can be selected as the sire and dam on a litter. If a parent is registered with another recognized registry, you can dual register it with ABRA by uploading its registration certificate and its complete pedigree.
Registering your kennel is a separate and optional step. It protects your prefix and lists you in the Breeder Directory, but it is not required to register a litter. See the kennel section at the end of this page.
Step 2: Submit the Litter
From your breeder dashboard, click Register a Litter. You will see a short form with these fields:
- Dam: pick from your My Dogs list. Only ABRA-registered females you own will appear.
- Sire: if you own the stud, pick him from your My Dogs list. If not, paste the eight-character breeding authorization code the stud owner sent you.
- Whelp date: the date the litter was born.
- Puppy count and sex: how many puppies, and the sex of each (used to assign letters A through Z for placeholder names).
Submit, pay the \$20 per puppy by card, and the puppies are created in the ABRA system the moment payment clears. Each puppy gets a placeholder name like "{Your Prefix} 2026-03-15A" and an AB-format registration number assigned from the next available sequence.
Step 3: Each Puppy Gets Its Registration
As soon as the litter is registered, every puppy shows up in your My Dogs list with a Needs Buyer badge. Each puppy holds a permanent ABRA registration from that moment, which you can print from the dashboard.
The registration records the breeding, names the parents, and assigns the puppy its ABRA number. ABRA no longer issues temporary puppy papers on new litters, so there is no second step and nothing further to pay. If you are still holding an older temporary paper from before the change, it remains valid and converts to a permanent registration at no charge.
You can also assign each puppy directly to its buyer from your dashboard. Enter the buyer's name and email and ABRA sends them a welcome email with a sign-up link. Once they create an account, the puppy automatically appears in their My Dogs and they can finish the profile (photo, color, microchip, story) themselves.
Puppies born primarily solid blue, black or chocolate do not receive breeding rights.
Those are disqualifying colours under the ABRA breed standard. The puppy is still registered, still gets its ABRA number, and still holds its place on the permanent breed record with its full pedigree. What it cannot do is pass registration on: it cannot be used to register a future litter with ABRA.
Tell your buyer before the sale. A registered dog without breeding rights is a companion, and buyers who were expecting to breed should hear it from you rather than discover it later.
Step 4: Your Buyer Claims the Puppy
Once you assign the puppy, the buyer gets a welcome email with a sign-up link. They create a free ABRA account, the puppy appears in their My Dogs with ownership of record now in their name, and they fill in the final registered name (your kennel prefix is preserved at the front), photo, and details. ABRA issues the permanent certificate and the dog is on the permanent breed record. The $20 per puppy you already paid covers this handoff, so the buyer pays nothing extra.
If the buyer never claims the puppy, its registration still holds the puppy's place. The pedigree exists in the archive. Future buyers, judges, or anyone tracing the line can find it. Claiming the puppy is what moves the ownership of record into the buyer's name and unlocks features like stud listing, litter registration, and the printable permanent certificate.
How long does American Bulldog litter registration take?
ABRA litter registration is instant. You register the litter yourself from your ABRA breeder dashboard, and every puppy in it is issued an ABRA registration number the moment the payment goes through. There is no registrar queue, no form to mail, and no waiting period. Puppy papers are in your dashboard immediately and you can print them the same day.
Registration numbers are issued for the whole litter at once, so you are not waiting puppy by puppy. Each puppy then stays out of the public archive until you finalize it, which means setting the registered name, confirming the sex, adding a photo, and assigning it to its buyer. That step is yours to take whenever you are ready, not a review ABRA performs.
Two other ABRA timelines are often confused with this one. Registering a single adult dog issues the registration number immediately, but the registrar checks the submission before the dog appears in the public archive, usually within one business day. The ABRA Verified Breeder badge is a separate application reviewed in five to seven business days. Neither of those delays a litter registration.
Do I need DNA testing to register an American Bulldog litter?
No. DNA testing is not required to register an American Bulldog litter with ABRA. A litter registers on the strength of both parents being on file, a valid breeding authorization where one is needed, and complete puppy details. No genetic test is part of that process.
DNA testing is required only if you want the litter to carry ABRA's optional Blue Ribbon designation. Blue Ribbon asks for an OFA or PennHIP hip evaluation plus NCL and ICH DNA tests on both the sire and the dam before a litter qualifies, and breeders usually run those through Embark or OFA. It is a health-screening layer on top of registration, not a condition of it, and a qualifying litter earns one free keeper-pup registration.
Which registry should I use for American Bulldog puppies?
It depends on what you need the papers to do, because these registries are built for different jobs. The American Bulldog is registered or recorded by several organisations and each one exists for a different reason.
- ABRA is breed-specific and has recorded American Bulldogs since 1998. The archive holds 44,692 dogs, of which 28,220 carry an ABRA registration number. Its job is pedigree depth and breed preservation, and every record feeds the public archive at pedigreedatabase.ca, which anyone can search without an account.
- UKC recognized the American Bulldog on January 1, 1999. It is an all-breed registry built around performance and conformation events, which makes it the practical choice if you intend to compete.
- ABA has been a breed-specific American Bulldog registry since 1989.
- NKC is an all-breed registry that records the American Bulldog alongside many other breeds.
- AKC is the one breeders most often get wrong. The American Bulldog was added to the AKC Foundation Stock Service in November 2019, and FSS is a recording service, not registration. In the AKC's own words, "FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration." An FSS listing documents lineage and opens some AKC companion events. It does not produce AKC registration papers.
Nothing stops you using more than one. Plenty of breeders register with ABRA for the permanent breed record and pedigree, then add UKC if they plan to show.
ABRA has 44,692 American Bulldogs in the archive, 28 years of breed records, and judges who have worked the breed in nine countries. Litter registration is flat \$20 per puppy with no separate litter fee, no per-puppy renewal, and no membership requirement. For a side-by-side comparison see ABRA vs Other Registries.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does litter registration cost?
\$20 per puppy. A litter of six is \$120 total. No separate litter fee.
Do both parents need to be ABRA-registered?
Yes. Both the sire and dam must be on file with ABRA. If you used an outside stud you do not own, the stud owner gives you a breeding authorization code so you can register without owning that male.
How long does processing take?
None. Litter registration is self-serve and instant. You do it from your own breeder dashboard and every puppy gets its ABRA registration number as soon as payment completes, so you can print papers the same day. The only step left is yours: finalizing each puppy with its registered name, sex, photo, and buyer before it joins the public archive.
Does ABRA still issue temporary puppy papers?
ABRA no longer issues temporary puppy papers on new litters. Every puppy in a registered litter now holds a permanent registration from the start, included in the $20 per puppy fee. The breeder assigns each puppy to its buyer by name and email and it moves into their name at no extra cost. Older temporary papers remain valid and still convert at no charge.
Can I name my puppies anything?
Your kennel prefix is required at the front of every puppy you breed. After the prefix, any name not already in the registry is allowed. If the puppy is sold and the new owner transfers ownership, they add their own kennel suffix in the format "Rosebull Logic @ Bear Valley". The breeder prefix stays for life.
Do I need to be a Pro member to register a litter?
No. A free ABRA account is enough. Pro membership (\$24 a month or \$240 a year) unlocks the Verified Breeder badge eligibility, stud listing, and breeder directory priority, but it is not required for litter registration.
Can I register a litter from NKC or UKC parents?
Not directly. Each parent must first be registered with ABRA. ABRA accepts dogs registered with other recognized American Bulldog registries provided you can document the pedigree. Once both parents are on file, the litter registers normally.
Optional: Register Your Kennel
You can register dogs and litters without ever registering a kennel. Registering one is optional, and it does something different: it protects your name and puts your program in front of buyers.
Your kennel name becomes a permanent prefix in front of every dog you breed. ABRA's naming policy treats it as permanent, so it stays on every puppy you produce and on every certificate ABRA prints from your program, even if you change kennel names later. You also get a full kennel profile listing your brood stock, the puppies you have produced, what is available now, and your health guarantee, plus a listing in the ABRA Breeder Directory.
Kennel registration is \$240 a year, or \$24 a month, and includes Breeder Pro membership. Register your kennel here.
